Bringing out the highlights in your hairs natural color can give a sparkle to your whole appearance. If you have a few red lights & want to emphasize them, make up a coloring rinse using dried marigold flowers & saffron strands. Steep a handful of marigold flowers & a generous pinch of saffron in 600 ml (1 pint) of boiling water. Leave for at least two hours, strain & use an after-shampoo rinse. There’s nothing quite like pure henna for coloring & conditioning the hair. Its a natural vegetable dye from the dried leaves of an Egyptian privet. The powder is mixed with boiling water to a paste resembling brownish-green mud, then applied with a brush or with the fingers (glove-clad, of course, to avoid staining). Work the henna in to the roots first, then along the hair shaft, gradually covering the whole head section by section & coiling each mesh out of the way once it has been treated. The end result will differ, according to the exact shade of your hair. It is always advisable to do a patch test, trying out the henna dye on a small strand of hair. Time exactly how many minutes it was left on, so that you’ll be sure of ending up with the right shade when you dye the whole head. Henna should not be used on hair that has just undergone some from of chemical treatment, such as coloring, tinting, dyeing or perming, all of which affect the coloring process.
For more subtle shading techniques, mix henna with other natural ingredients. add 115 ml (1/2 cupful) of dried sage to 600 ml (1 pint) of boiling water & steep overnight, before straining. Then mix 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of ground cloves with 15 ml (1 tbsp) of henna. Add enough of the sage tea to make a paste & stir until it is smooth. Shampoo the hair & rinse thoroughly. Next towel dry & apply the paste to all parts of the hair. Comb thorough to ensure an even distribution. COVER THE head with an old towel & allow the color to develop for 30 minutes, or longer for a deeper shade. Rinse the hair well in warm water. This will gives a slightly darker shade than henna used on its own, but be sure to make a patch test first, remembering the eventual color depends on hair texture & condition. Don’t do this treatment on artificially colored hair.
